Learning Outside the Classroom – School Days and Stays at The Kingswood Trust

The Kingswood Trust delivers Learning Outside the Classroom activities for schools and other groups through day visits, programmes of activities and residential stays for one or more nights. Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) is the use of places other than the classroom for teaching and learning.

We hold the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, a nationally recognised indicator of good quality outdoor education. The award combines the essential elements of provision – learning and safety – into one easily recognisable and trusted accreditation.

Supporting children from Early Years and through the Primary phase and older children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, The Kingswood Trust provides carefully planned activities that support the school’s curriculum delivery, offering challenging, exciting and memorable experiences to help children learn.

  • All our activities are designed and led by teachers and qualified centre staff, with visiting staff fully involved in the delivery of the activities.
  • Our planning is collaborative and links carefully to each schools priorities and children’s individual needs.
  • We invite schools to bring their own creative ideas to their visit and we will make it happen.
  • Learning Outside the Classroom activities are driven by developing new skills and knowledge, increasing confidence and independence and raising self-esteem.
  • Our activities directly support the curriculum.
  • We allow time and space for collaboration with friends and staff, developing improved communication and building positive relationships.
  • We ensure our Learning Outside the Classroom provision is evaluated through school and individual feedback.

Outdoor Education Programmes and Projects

Try out one of our programmes or projects, where adults and young people, usually in a group of up to 12, participate in a series of six sessions, one day per week for six weeks.

  1. Forest School Programme for all ages
  2. Animal Encounter for all ages
  3. Woodland Foresters Project for ages 11-15 years
  4. Learn and Grow Project for ages 16-25 years

Some of these projects are funded and support disadvantaged young people, those with special educational needs and disabilities, a mental health need or other additional needs.

Children learn to use tools and solve problems, directing their own learning.

Forest School

Forest School is an inspirational process, that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees. Forest School is a specialised learning approach that sits within and compliments the wider context of outdoor and woodland education.” Forest School Association.

At The Kingswood Trust, “Forest School” practice is based on three key principles:

  • We capitalise on the outdoors as a real context for learning.
  • We utilise the woodland/outdoor environment as a rich source of natural materials and resources for learning.
  • We build upon the way young children learn — active, first hand experiences using all their senses — investigative and exploratory learning that builds upon their natural curiosity.
  • All staff leading hold a Forest Leaders Level 3 Award.

Our ‘Forest School Base Camp’ has the facility for building fires and the fire pit is designed for children to learn about safety whilst benefiting from its warmth in winter and the pleasure of toasting and eating marshmallows, crab apples and other tasty goodies. Children learn to use tools and solve problems, directing their own learning.

I loved the zipline and feeding the rabbits. My most favourite time was when we ate our roast dinner and then went to the play area. I have been begging Miss Mason to come back soon and I hope we will.
